For the New Year, Hollywood is doing its best to make up for the lackluster that was 2010. One of the first films is The Mechanic starring Jason Statham, Ben Foster, and Donald Sutherland. It is a remake of the 1972 film of the same name. It centers on a man named Walter Bishop played by Statham who is a professional assassin. His next assignment is to kill his own mentor Harry played by Sutherland. After he unwillingly completes his assignment, he decides to train Harry’s son Steve played by Foster to be a killer himself. The two men become a team and go on missions together to find the person who killed Steve’s father, the man Bishop used to work for.
Now, this is not Statham’s first action film, but it seems like this is The Transporter just with a different name. I think Statham is being typecast, and if he doesn’t stop doing this soon, he will always be like that. He’s been in all three of those films, plus The Expendables. It’s time for him to venture into different roles and films. Foster was great in 3:10 to Yuma as well as Alpha Dog, so he had more of a part here. This was a very good action film nonetheless.
It is a little more character driven than just a shoot ‘em up flick. This is a great start for the New Year; I can’t wait to see what comes next. I give The Mechanic an eight out of ten. What do you think about this remake? Should it not have been made? Did Statham and Foster live up to the hype? Send us an e-mail and let your voice be heard.
