It’s a new year now, and with that comes new pilots. NBC kicks off 2011 with the premiere of their new drama The Cape starring David Lyons, Summer Glau, and Keith David. It’s about a cop named Vince Faraday played by Lyons, who is framed for the murder of the Chief of Police. While the cops are in pursuit of him, he escapes an explosion which was believed to have killed him. He is rescued by a group of carnival performers, who are also part time bank robbers, an odd combination if you ask me.

The ringleader is Max, played by Keith David, who teaches him how to use a magic cape and all the abilities that come with it. Faraday takes on the persona of The Cape, which is his son’s favorite comic book hero, to take back his family and restore order to Palm City. Now that the city is run by a privatized police force called ARK, it’s going to be even tougher for our hero. He meets a mysterious blogger named Orwell played by Glau of Firefly and Terminator fame. She assists The Cape in bringing down his enemy named Chess who is also the owner of the ARK Corporation.

Lyons was previously on the final season of ER , but this is his first major role. Glau and David have had experience with both TV and movie roles. After watching the first two episodes, I was impressed with this one. However, Lyons becoming The Cape within a week or so doesn’t normally happen on other superhero-type shows. I see room for improvement and growth here. I give The Cape three stars out of four (by standard critic ratings). It has a good balance of dialogue, action, and humor. What do you think about this? Did NBC get it right? Is this the right replacement for the former NBC drama Heroes ? Or, should the superhero genre take a break? Send us an e-mail and let your voice be heard:
