Very few films have been considered “talked-about movies” in 2010, but one of the few exceptions is Black Swan . It’s about a talented ballet dancer named Nina Sayers, played by Natalie Portman, who is trying to get the part of the swan queen in a production of Swan Lake. She believes this is the role that can make her career, so she is willing to bend over backwards to get the part. She does end up getting the part of playing both the white swan and the black swan, but as the attention grows, so does the pressure. The new member of the company named Lilly played by Mila Kunis, tries to offer her encouragement and support, but her motives are put into question as the film goes on. Nina is even dealing with the support of her mom, which can be overbearing at times.
After watching this movie to understand what the buzz was all about, I get it now. Ballet has not been the focus of a film in many years, especially not like this. It basically shows you what these people go through to be perfect. Portman’s character is also dealing with her fears and inner demons that could prevent her from having a successful performance. I believe that this is one of the best films of the year.
Portman has come a long way from her roles in the Star Wars trilogy, as well as other films like Brothers . As far as Mila Kunis goes, this was by far her darkest role to date. This is a complete 180 from her role in The Book of Eli. I agree with Portman being nominated for best actress and Kunis as best supporting actress for the Golden Globes. Black Swan is a 9/10 as far as I am concerned. There were some scenes that I could have gone without, but it was still a great movie. What do you think of this film? Did they choose the right people to play these roles? Is this worth the hype that its getting? Send us an e-mail.
